Originally a group of ranches, the
Laikipia Plateau Reserve came into existence in 1991 when
the ranches turned from farming to wildlife. The plateau
extends all the way to the eastern side of the Rift valley.
The Laikipia Plateau reserve is last bastion for the
endangered Black rhinoceros.
Location
Bordering the district of Isiolo, the reserve is situated
northeast of the Laikipia district and can be reached via
road.
Climate The Laikipia Plateau Reserve generally
experiences hot and dry weather.
Wild Life Attractions
The rare black rhinoceros is the crowd puller. Also, the
Laikipia Plateau Reserve can boast of having the largest
elephant population outside the Kenyan national parks. Other
animals include the wild dogs, cheetahs, warthogs,
elephants, elands, buffaloes, Grevy's zebras, bushbucks, and
cats. Has a good bird variety that includes cranes.
Things to Do
The Laikipia Plateau reserve is a good choice for game
viewing and bird watching.
